Health Promotion Chapter 2: Emerging Populations and Health

Voluntary Migration Generally motivation by the quest of the individual or group for one or more goals including education opportunities, economic benefits, social improvements, and political or religious freedom
Immigrants Come for positive experience
Refugees Leave homeland under threat of injury or loss of life
Sojourners Stay for a specified length of time and then return to their homelands
Involuntary Migration Fleeing or being forced out of homeland
Race Emphasizes physical properties and biological heredity; Categorical system to designate persons with distinctive physical characteristics
Arbitrary Taxonomy More variation within races than between them, can't be distinctive easily
Social Construct Not useful to identify populations for health/ research purposes
Ethnicity A collective identity, a sense of uniqueness within the larger society, and a distinction from nonmembers. Denote sharing of customs, food, dress, language, and etc.
Ethnic Group Includes members with the sense of belonging to the collective identity. Set apart on basis of cultural or national origin characteristics. Values and perceptions about health and illness evolve from the socialization process
Minority Group Consists of people who receive less than their share of wealth, power, or social status
Culture An element of ethnicity; consists of shared patterns of values and behaviors that characterize a cultural group
Cultural Values Unique, individual expressions of a particular culture that have been accepted as appropriate. Guide actions, decisions, and behaviors.
Value Orientation Learned and shared thru the socialization process. Reflect the personality type of a particular group.
Health care barriers for diverse populations Lack of insurance, Availability of health care facilities/ resources, Inadequate transportation, Complexity of health care system, Fragmentation of care, Attitudes of health care provider and incongruent beliefs b/w patients/ providers
Professional Health Care System Characterized by specialized education and knowledge, responsibility for care, and expectation of remuneration of services rendered
Folk Healing System Embodies the beliefs, values, and treatment approaches of a particular cultural group
Ethnocentrism Views other ways as inferior, unnatural, or even barbaric
Holism Incorporates family and support system in care, considers patient viewpoint
Ethnic Minorities Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, Blacks/African Americans, Latinos/ Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Arab Americans
