Leif Eriksson Son of Erik the Red, Viking, loved adventure, was sailing to Greenland and got blown of course to America, and so was the first European to be there.
Prince Henry the Navigator Portuguese prince, built a school of navigation to teach better methods of sailing, had an observatory, financed research of mapmakers and shipbuilders and paid for expeditions to explore the west coast of Africa.
Bartolomeu Dias Portuguese, he headed an expedition along the African coast, got blown around the tip of Africa, and that point became known as the Cape of Good Hope. He wanted to continue, but his men didn't and so, because they were low on provisions they didn't.
Vasco de Gama Portuguese, was sent to round the Cape of Good Hope, and landed in India a year after he left. He eventually governed a small colony there.
Christopher Columbus Italian explorer, tried to sail to Asia by going the opposite direction, sailed to America, though only to the islands, and thought he was in Asia. He found the Taino people and traded with them. He died thinking that he had made it to Asia.
Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese with a Spanish fleet, sailed to America, around the southern tip, across the Pacific Ocean to the Philippines, where he was killed. The rest of his fleet continued sailing, and those who were left were the first to circumnavigate the world.
Father Bartolomeu de las Casas Protested strongly to how Columbus was treating the Taino people. He even wrote letters to King Ferdinand of Spain and Queen Isabella of Spain, asking for them to order Columbus to stop.
