Constitutional Convention Vocabulary

What is a Delegate? a representative
What is the Legislative Branch? a branch of government that makes the laws
What is the Executive Branch? a branch of government that enforces the laws (The President is the head of the this branch)
What is the Judicial Branch? a branch of government that interprets the laws
What is a compromise? a settlement in which each side gives up a part of what it wants
What is representation? a system in which people elect representatives to pass their laws
What is commerce? a trade; the buying or selling of goods
What is impeach? to accuse a federal official of wrongdoing
What is the Federal Government? a national government; a government that conducts the business of the nation
What is the State Government? a government that conducts the business of the state
What is a congress? The Legislative Branch of the government (Both the House of Representatives and the Senate make up this)
What is a senate? an upper house of congress (Each state has 2 of these)
What is the House of Representatives? a lower house of congress (The of how many there are is determined by the population of the state)
What is the Chief Executive? the highest official of the Executive Branch; the President
What is a Justice? the Judge of the Supreme Court
What is the Chief Justice? the highest official of the Supreme Court
What is the Supreme Court? the Judicial Branch of the Government
What is a term? a set period of time; the period (length of time) for holding office
What is an elector? a selected person from each state who chooses the President
