Benzodiazepines exhibit sleep producing properties at higher doses.
Hypnotics side effects "hang over" confusion, lethargy, nightmares, palpitations, tinnitus, constipation, dry mouth, urinary inc. rash, drugs cause physical or psy. dependency
Nsg considerations/Hypnotics do not mix with alcohol, do not give meds to family or friends, recognize withdrawals symptoms with long term use, most are ordered p.r.n. at HS (10 pm). Nurse should discuss alternatives to hypnotics.
