Amino acids | most important components of proteins in the human body. They are essential for synthesis of body tissue in growth, mainteneace, and repair. |
Essential amino acids | can only be obtained from daily food sources. |
Anabolism | Constructive metabolism characterized by conversion of simple substances into more complex compounds of living matter. |
Catabolism | Break down of body tissue into simpler substances. |
Metabolism | Chemical processes that result in growth, generation of energy, elimination of wastes and other functions concerned with the distribution of nutrients in the blood after digestion |
Glycogen | a polysaccharide found in the liver and muscles that is easily converted to glucose for energy |
Glycogenesis | The process for storage of glucose in the form of glycogen in the liver |
Lipogenesis | Converts glucose to fat for storage. |
Gluconeogenesis | The process for storage of glucose in the form of glycogenin the liver. |
Dietary reference intake (DRIs) | Info. on each vitamin or mineral to reflect a range of minimum to aximum amounts that avert deficiency or toxicity |
Anthropometry | Systematic measurement of the size and makeup of the body using height and weight as the principle measures. |

Enteral Nutrition (EN) | Nutrients given into the stomach or intestinal tract ia a feeding tube. |
