Full funding | national government will pay off all the debt to foreign countries, debt within the nation, and individual state debt |
Assumption | State debts would become a national obligation |
Customs duties | Tariff on imports to bring in revenue |
Revenue Tariff | Way to bring money into the government to pay off national deebt |
Strict Constructionism | the constitution should be interpreted strictly |
Loose Constructionism | If it wasn't forbidded in the Constitution, it was permitted |
Elastic Clause | allowed the government to do things that were implied and not specifically forbidden |
States' Rights | Jefferson believed that most of the power should be retained by the states. |
Necessary and Proper Clause | The part of the Constitution that allowed the government to do what is necessary and proper to keep the government strong, implied powers |
French Revolution | At first we stayed out of the war, until our ships started being captured, it violated the rights of neutrals |
Isolationims | Stay out of other people's business for a while |
Neutrality | Don't get in other people's war |
Alliance of 1778 | Made with France and promised military back up if Britain attacked France |

Convention of 1800 | voided alliance with France, but it set up commercial treaty with France |
Social Compact Theory | Persons' moral and/ or political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement |
Secession | Removal from the Union, lots of talk from New England but no action |
Undeclared French War | 1745 we helped British, we captured Lewisburg, it was given back when France signed the peace treaty |
12th Amendment | Provides the procedure by which the President and Vice President are elected |
Revolution of 1800 | Thomas Jefferson was elected president and he changed the government, making it less strict by eliminating rank seating at State dinners |
Patronage | giving jobs in return for votes |
Albert Gallatin | Secretary of Treasury under James Madison, replaced Hamilton and he tried to balance the budget |
Judiciary Act of 1801 | Created 16 new federal judgeships and other judicial offices, signed by John Adams in the last day of August |
Midnight Appointments | Eisenhower signed in the new judges in the last day he was in office |
Samuel Chase | Supreme Court Justice so unpopular that Republicans named vicious dogs for him, they tried to impeach him, but not enough charges |
Gunboats | War boats that had few guns and were small, sent to fight the Barbary Pirates |
Right of Deposit | the ability to use ports, US had one for New Orleans |
Trafalgar | War between the British and French and Spanish fleets, Britain won and their naval supremacy was established |
Austerlitz | Napolean's biggest victory, the victory led to the end of the 3rd Coalition and signing of the Treaty of Pressburg |
Orders in Council | Passed in 1807, said all trade had to go through Britain |
Continental System | Passed by France, said that all trade with Britain was illegal, and if you did it your ship would be seized |
Berlin Decree | passed by Napolean, claimed that the British blockade was illegal in international law. Napolean blocked trade from the British Isles |
Milan Decree | Passed by Napolean to strengthen the Continental Congress, also used to strengthen the Berlin decree |
Non-intercourse Act | Reopened trade with all countries of the world except Britain and France |
The Prophet | Shawnee brothers that fought back against white men taking over their land. |
Mr. Madison's War | Madison asked Congress to declare war and it led to the war of 1812 |
Oliver Hazard Perry | War of 1812 hero, he led the attack against a British fleet in Lake Erie. Known as the "hero of Lake Erie" |
Battle of Lake Erie | We lost 80% of our troops, but still won the battle because of Oliver Perry. Helped the US keep control of the Northwest |
Battle of Plattsburg | US was outnumbered 5 to 0, but we still won the battle |
Thomas McDonough | Halts the British army and forces retreat |
Battle of Horseshoe Bend | Marhc 1814, breaks the Indian power in the Southwest, Creek Indians v. Andrew Jackson, takes place in Alabama, big victory for Jackson |
Privateers | Private individuals or ships that could attack foreign ships during wartime, they had to be authorized by the government |
Election of 1812 | James Madison v. DeWitt Clinton, James Madison won although he was critized greatly by the Federalists for the War of 1812 |
Rush-Bagot Treaty | disarmed the Great Lakes and left the border between Canada and US unarmed, still that way today |
Sectionalism | excessive regard for sectional or local interests; regional of local spirit |
Clay's American System | Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise which helped determine how states would be free or a slave state |
Land Act of 1820 | People could buy 80 acres of land for $1.25/acre in cash |
Debtor Prisons | People were put in "prison" for not paying their bills. Gradually the prisons were abolished. It generally hit the working class |
Cohen v. Virginia | Cohen brothers were tried for selling D.C. lottery tickets in VA, the Supreme Court ruled that they had power under the Constitution to review state's findings. Helped expand the power of the Supreme Court |
36-30 | The line drawn by the Missouri Compromise that established which states would be free and which would be slave states |
Fletcher v. Peck | An argument over the validiaty of contracts. Extended the jursidiction to state law and state court decisions, expanding the power of the Supreme Court |
Joint Occupation | Britain and US had a joint occupation on Oregon, they both were occupying the territory |
Anglo-American Treaty | Betweem Britain and US, allowed for joint occupation of Oregon |
Adams-Onis Treaty | Also known as the Florida Purchase Treaty, it gave Florida to the US and Texas to Spain |
Russo-American Treaty | The Treaty that Russia agreed to give up her claims to the Oregon treaty |
Black Hawk War | War against the Sac and Fox Indians from the Mississippi, Black Hawk, the Indian Chief rallied and tried to defeat them, but after a lack of support in Illinois he admitted defeat |
Eli Whitney | From Connecticut, invented the cotton gin and interchangable parts |
Interchangable Parts | Can replace one part instead of buying a new one, helped manufacturing boom |
Robert Fulton | engineer that installed a steam engine in a vessel, invented the first steam boat, made tralveing easier |
Samuel Slater | Father of the textile industry, he snuck factory plans from Europe and built his factory in RI where he hired children to work |
Francis Cabot Lowell | introduced the factory system to the US, idea that you go from a raw material to a finished product under one roof |
Waltham System | very structured girls way lived, they worked in the mills and followed strict rules |
The middling class | middle class became the factory workers instead of the farmers |
Cotton gin | removes impurities from the cotton, made the Cotton industry boom in the South making slavery boom as well |
Boston Associates | Investment company that dominated the textile, railroad, insurance, and bank industries |
Lowell Girls | Farm girls that worked in a textile mill, they lived a highly structured life including church and behavior |
Isaac Singer | one of the inventors of the sewing machine, he perfected Elias Howe's version, gave a boost to the Northern industralization |
Commonwealth v. Hunt | Mass. Supreme Court ruled that labor unions were not illegal conspiracy, as long as they protested peacefully |
John Deere | invented a steel plow, helped Western farmers plow the weedy tough soil, it could be pulled by a horse |
Tom Thumb | Train that was invented by Peter Cooper, First American-built steam locomotive |
Cyrus Field | Created the Atlantic Telegraph Company, and laid the first telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean |
Clipper Ships | Long, narrow ships that could travel quickly through the water, used for shipping |
Fulton's Folly | The steam-boat invented by Robert Fulton |
DeWitt Clinton | Governor of NY that strongly urged for the Erie Canal to be dug |
John Jacob Astor | fur trader and real estate speculator, he left 30 million in his estate |
Samuel Morse | invented the telegraph, helped the business world, pulled the world all together |
