1861-Dorthea Dix | a school teacher, appointed to organize military hospitals and provide medical suppliess to the union army. After the Civil War, she campaigns up and down the eastern seaboard for more humane treatment of the mentally ill. |
1861-65 Harriet Tubman | Using the "underground railroad," she nurses sick slaves fleeing to the north |
1869-Lavina Dock | National women's Suffrage Association organized to promote women's right to vote. She was born in harrisburg, pa, uses this as a way to promote the right of nurses in 1890s to 1920. 19th amendment (right of women to vote passed in 1920) |
