Cell definitions for Mrs. D

QuestionAnswer
Anatomy- the study of the form and structure of the human body
Physiology- the study of the processes of the living organsisms, or why and how they work
Protoplasm- the basic substance of all life
Cell- the basic unit of structure and function in all living things
Cell Membrane- the outer protective covering of the cell
Cytoplasm- a semi-fluid inside the cell
Organelles- cell structure that may help a cell to function; located in the cytoplasm
Nucleus- a mass in the cytoplasm that may control many of the cells activities and is important in cell division
Nucleolus- located inside the nucleus and importatnt in cell reproduction
Chromatin- located in the cytoplasm and near the nucleus; contains two centrioles that seperate during mitosis
Mitochondrain- rod shaped or organelles located throughout the cytoplasm
Golgi Apparcitus- stack of membrane layers located in the cytoplasm
Endoplasmic Reticulum- a fine network of tubular structures located in the cytoplasm
Lysosomes- oval or round bodies found throughout the cytoplasm
Pinotic Vesticles- pocket-like folds in the cell membrane
Mitosis- a form of asexual reproduction
Meisosis- when sex cells divide by a process
Tissue- when cells of the same type join together for a common purpose
Centrosome- located in cytoplasm and near the nucleus; contains two centrioles that seperate during mitosis
Dehydration- an insufficient amount of tissue fluid
Edema- swelling of the tissue due to excess tissue fluids
Epitheliol Tissue- tissue that covers the surface of the body and is the main tissue of the skin
Connective Tissue- the supporting fabric of organs and other body parts; soft and hard
Nerve Tissue- controls and coordinates body activities by transmitting messages throughout the body
Muscle Tissue- produces power and movement by contraction of muscle fibers
Organ- two or more tissues joined together to perform a specific function
System- organs and other body parts joined together to perform a particular function
Vacuole- a membrane-boind cavity within a cell, often containing a watery liquid or secretion
Stem Cell- a cell that upon division replaces its own numbers and also gives rise to cells that differentiate further into one or more specialized types, as various B and T cells
