Medication for coughs

Nonopioid - Dextromethorphan | a) acts in CNS b) doesn't affect respirations c) can cause euphoria when taken in high doses |
Expectorants - guaifenesin (Mucynex) | Def: a drug that renders cough more productive by stimulating the flow of respiratory tract secretions. a) for the drug to be effective higher doses than normal may need to be employed |
Mucolytics - acetycysteine (Mucomyst) and/or hypertonic saline | Def: drug reacts directly with mucus to render it more watery. a) inhaled drug b) AE: can trigger bronchospasms c) acetylcysteine smells like rotten eggs |
