| What is influenza? | a) contagious disease caused by the influenza virus |
| How is it spread? | coughing, sneezing, or nasal secretions |
| Who gets influenza the most? | everyone can get it, but rates of infection are the highest among children |
| What are the symptoms? | - fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills, muscle aches, fatigue - some other illnesses present with the same symptoms, so they are easy to confuse |
| How many types of influenza are there? (2) | a) Inactivated (killed) vaccine - given as the flu shot b) Attenuated (weakened) vaccine - sprayed into the nostrils |
| Who should get the flu shot? | Anyone over the age of six (6) months, but especially the elderly, people living in communities, healthcare workers. |
| When to get vaccinated? | The influenza season usually lasts from November until March, but it won't hurt to get the vaccine as soon as it is available. |
| Who should not get the vaccine? | a) people allergic to eggs (the vaccine is grown in eggs) b) anyone who has ever had a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine c) people who had Guillaume-Barré Syndrome d) people who are moderately to severely ill should wait to recover first. |
