Influenza Vaccine

Pharm Lab - Administer Influenza Vaccinations

QuestionAnswer
What is influenza? a) contagious disease caused by the influenza virus
How is it spread? coughing, sneezing, or nasal secretions
Who gets influenza the most? everyone can get it, but rates of infection are the highest among children
What are the symptoms? - fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills, muscle aches, fatigue - some other illnesses present with the same symptoms, so they are easy to confuse
How many types of influenza are there? (2) a) Inactivated (killed) vaccine - given as the flu shot b) Attenuated (weakened) vaccine - sprayed into the nostrils
Who should get the flu shot? Anyone over the age of six (6) months, but especially the elderly, people living in communities, healthcare workers.
When to get vaccinated? The influenza season usually lasts from November until March, but it won't hurt to get the vaccine as soon as it is available.
Who should not get the vaccine? a) people allergic to eggs (the vaccine is grown in eggs) b) anyone who has ever had a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine c) people who had Guillaume-Barré Syndrome d) people who are moderately to severely ill should wait to recover first.
