Heat Application
Purposes: To provide general comfort and to speed the healing process.

HEAT LAMPS : Expected outcomes: The client will derive the benefits of the heat treatment such as increased circulation and healing; decreased swelling, inflammation, pain or muscle or muscle spasms or thermoregulation. No injury to the client. | Placed 18 -24 inches from the patient, 60 watt bulb, seldom used due to safety issues/potential for burns. heat lamps ar not used much anymore, can be burned easily, only time used routinely is in the nursery & have special temperature probe to regulate. | Assess the skin integrity in the area where heat is to be applied. (pre-existing skin breakdown, redness, or scar tissue, level of pain/swelling in the area where heat is to be applied. Confuse pt, vascular pt, D.M. |
Aqua K Pad | Water is heated and pumped through a series of tubes. Temperature setting at 105 degrees F, cover pad with towel or pillow case. Can be used with compresses - disposable pads can be dampened, Reservoir filled with distilled water 2/3 full. | |
information on Aqua K Pads mostly are: | disposable now, suction cup to table so it does not fall on floor. Distilled H2O is used, fill to the fill line. Heat setting 105, there is a key on the back of the machine, so you can adjust heat, but you normally don't change the setting. | |
information on Aqua K Pads continued... | Aqua flows through pad, blue side is dry side, white side you can get wet or use moist heat, always cover with cloth (towel or pillow case) never pins! Look at wris compae o other arm for swelling, can you feel me touching you? | |
Aqua K Pads continued... | Check capillary refill, squeeze and color should reeturn in 2 seconds. The K pad may be ordered for coninuous, or 20 minutes on 20 minutes off, check after 15 minutes, every hour or so unwrap and check, and make sure it is not getting worse. | |
Aqua K Pads continued... | Aqua K pad may be used for deep vein thrombosis. Reduce swelling, blood pumps to area easier when elevated, ideally higher than the heart! | |
Chemical Packs / Infant Heel Warmers | Chemicals are activated when conects are squeezed. Cover with cloth. | |
Hot Water Bottle | Fill 2/3 full. Cover with (105 - 110 degrees maximum, fill 2/3, then squeeze the air out, so it is not hard like a football. | |
Heating Pad | Medium or low setting only. Patient should not lie on the heating pad (low setting only, as you can fall asleep and burn self and upper part of body not laying on for pressure heat). | |
Disposable Sitz | For home or outpatient use and infection control purposes. (Infection Control So Now Only Disposable) | |
Warming Blanket | Bath blankets are placed in a blanket warmer, layered under bedspread to warm pt., provide comfort & raise temp, check pt temp freq & remove when temp is normal you want to stop using them as to not overheat pt.. | |
Bair Hugger | Hyperthermic blanket which surrounds patient in warm air, pediatric and adult sizes. (efficient for hypothernmia patients) | |
Warm, Moist Packs | Can be sterile or clean (for open wounds, always use sterile techinique). Cover with plastic or towel to hold in heat (if open skin use sterile technique, cover with towel or chux to hold the heat in, warm packs 15 - 20 minutes generally) | |

Timing : | 15-20 minutes, although some can be up to 30 mnutes Generally, the larger th body surface area being ttreated, the lower the temperature and the shorter the time. |
