Genetics Quiz 7

Gurnick Genetics Quiz 7

QuestionAnswer
genetics study of genes and how they produce certain characteristics
gene portion of the dna that code for a specific protein that determines a specific characteristic
locus the specific location of a specific gene on a specific chromosome
allele is a version of a gene. we get one allele from mom one from dad
how alleles are named after the trait they code for. example a gene coding for protein A is called allele A or just A
genotype is the list of all the alleles present in a diploid cell of the offspring
Autosomal 1-22 codes for traits
sex linked 23 codes for gender
heterozygous when offspring inherits different versions of alleles ex Bb or bB
homozygous when offspring inherits identical alleles from parents bb BB
phenotype the outcome or result off the alleles that present
phenotype depends on a. genotype (which alleles are present) b. how the alleles interact with each other
dominant genes mask recessive genes
dominant vs recessive one is not "better" than the other so to speak
genotype is the bb or BB phenotype is the blue eyes of brown eyes
In heterozygous genotype Bb the phenotype will reflect the dominant allele Bb= brown eyes
blue eyes are an example homozygous recessive phenotype bb
Solving genetic problems a. establish the genotype of of both parents b. cross the parents alleles using the pummetts square
genetic problems for x-linked chromosome x-linked genetic disorder it is a mutant allele on #23
why are females less prone to x-linked genetic disorders because they have the back up x XX vs XY since the Y only codes for testosterone if the X is mutant the disorder will always present
example of a x-linked genetic disorder is hemophilia hemophilia is a mutation that affects the clotting of blood
co-dominance when two different alleles are equally dominant
blood types red blood cells have specific id proteins on there surface
different blood types A B AB O
recessive blood type O
genotype for blood type a AA AO
genotype for blood type b BB BO
genotype for blood type o OO
genotype for blood type ab AB
