DSM has three purposes provide nomenclature: define charecteristics or symptoms for each diagnosis: assist in identifying underlying causes
Multiaxial classification system allows practitioner to identify all factors that relate to a condition
Axis 1 identifies all major psych disorders except mental retardation and personality disorders
Axis 2 reporting mental retardation and personality disorders, and maladaptive personality features and defense mechanisms
Axis 3 reporting current medical conditions relevant to mental disorder or that are necessary to understand the person
Axis IV psychosocial and enviromental problems that might affect diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
Axis V global assessment of functioning, rates overall psych functioning scale of 0-100.
Psychotropic drugs used to treat mental illness, developed starting in the 1950's
