Oregon Trail | Major route west 2,000 miles long from Independence into Oregon. |
re-occupation and re-annexation | An idea supported by Polk and got him elected. Re-occupy Oregon and re-annex Texas. |
Fifty-Forty or fight | Wanted to set the US Canada boarder here. Polk originally proposed 49 parallel, Brits declined it and then later agreed to it. |

William H. Seward | was more for the complete elimination of slavery. A spokesma of the younger generation of politicians who opposed the proposed compromise. |
Millard Fillmore | succeeded Zachary Taylor in 1850 and supported the compromise. used influence to get other Whigs behind him. |
Omnibus Bill | Douglas tried to break it up, it was Clay's compromise that would supposedly solve the sectional crisis |
Franklin Pierce | Became pres. tried to maintain harmony by just avoiding the issue of slavery. |
Ostend Manifesto | Pierce had been communicating with Spain to try and buy Cuba from them. He then received a message from some of his envoys in Ostend Belgium who tried to convince him to take it by force. This letter of course leaked to public and gained this name |
