1920 - 1930 Terms

Terms related to the twenties and thirties.

Nazi Soviet Pact - 1939 To avoid having to fight the Russians when he (Hitler) attacked Poland, he offered Stalin a deal- to divide Poland between them.
The Great Depression-1929 People couldn't get jobs because of the unemployment rate. People had no food or shelter, everything was lost.
The Ruhr Occupation-1923 French troops went into the Ruhr and took over mines to collect the reparations in coal. The Ruhr workers went on strike and the Weimar Republic backed them by paying their wages.
The Leage of Nations-1920 To keep the peace, The Versailles Treaty set up the League of Nations. The idea was to give leaders from all the countries of the world somewhere to talk over their differences. But the leage of nations would not use force to get anything solved.
The Munich Putch- 1923 Hitler tried to overthrow the Weimar Republic. But the Weimar Republic stood up for itself, and Hitler's bullies/facists ran away.
The night of the long knives-1934 Hitler killed off those who helped him rise to power.
Hitler writes Mein Kampf-1923 Hitler was in prison when he wrote Mein Kampf ("My stuggle"). For his loyal Nazis this book became a bible.
Hitler Occupies the Rhineland-1936 Hitler ordered his new army to march into Rhineland. He ordered his generals to retreat if the French to stop them.
The Dawes Plan-1924 It was a scheme to pay off the reparations by installments. A new kind of money was brought in and pieces came down and wages were worth something again.
Hitler takes the rest of Czechoslokia-1938 Hitler ordered the Czechs to hand over part of their country called the Sudetenland. He wanted it because of it factories and coal-mines.
Japan Attacks Manchuria-1931 The Japanese wanted to have its rich coal mines and fertile farmlands. The Japanese attacked and brought Manchuria under their rule and walked out of the league.
Hitler becomes Chancellor-1933 Field Marshall Hindenburg, Germany's President made Hitler Chancellor of Germany
The enabling act-1933 It took away everyone in Germany's rights. It was supposed to be for a short period of time but Hitler ended up extending this time indefinetly.
The reichtag fire-1933 Hitler burned down the Reichtag to insure that he gets all power
The Treaty of Versailles-1919? Allied leaders drew up a peace treaty. The treaty said that Germany could have only a tiny army and no air force or submarines.
Hitler rearms Germany-1935 Hitler began to strengthen the German army. He started to build a strong air force.
The Nuremburg Laws-1935 Hitler took all rights away from the Jews. They couldn't have government jobs or work as lawyers, doctor's or teachers.
The Munich Accord/Agreement-1938 It was an agreement made (without Czechoslovakia there) to give the Sudetenland to Germany.
Anschluss with Austria-1938 Hitler ordered his soldiers to march in Austria. Hitler said that his army had to keep order there.
The Battle of Britain-1940 Hitler ordered his air force, the Luftwaffe to attack. This was known as the Battle of Britain.
The Miracle of Dunkirk-1940 300 thousand French and British soldiers were evacuated by sea from the coastal city of Dunkirk.
Operation Barbarossa- Germany attacks USSR- and catches Stalin completely off guard.
Blitzkrieg Involved the use of machines to attack very quickly and over run opponents. 1st wave=Luftwaffe drop bombs. 2nd wave=tanks, 3r wave=troops
Appeasement When you give in to a bully, hoping that they will leave you alone
