Bird Behavior

QuestionAnswer
Syrinx Produces sound without vocal cords; sound is produced either by vibrations of the walls of this or by causing vibrations within the air flowing through this. Parrots and parakeets can mimic human speech with this
Grouse Beats air with wings to create sound that can be heard from half a mile a away
Visual display The "body language" of birds. Usually used to show protection of territory
Dusting The process of birds taking dust baths to rid themselves of parasites. Common among house sparrows
Anting The process of birds picking up ants in its bill and rubs the ant on its plumage. Common among starlings and robins
Mobbing The action of a group of birds attacking a larger bird
Killdeer Famous for pretending to have a broken wing to lure predators away from its nest
Rodent running A bird nesting in thick grass sneaks away from its nest when it senses a predator's approach by squeaking like a mouse
Altitudinal migration The type of migration that takes place over relatively short distances between ares of higher and lower elevations. Common among chickadees and ptarmigans
Flyways The route that migrating birds follow year after year
