Classifications | 70% of cases are superficial. 15-20% of cases are nodular. 5-10% of cases are lentigo maligna. |
Melanoma | More common in women 20-29. More common in white population. Leading cause of death in skin diseases. Median age of diagnosis is 53. |
Physical Findings | Superficial spreading melanoma is seen on sun exposed areas, scalp, calves are common sights. Nodular can be found anywhere but are common on the scalp and sun exposed areas. |
Physical findings contd | Lentigo maligna occurs more often in older adults on sun exposed skin. Acral lentiginous melanoma occurs often on soles of the feet, subungal mucous membranes, palms. |
ABCD | ASYMMETRY. BORDER. COLOR. DIAMETER (>6mm). When you see these, refer to dermatologist. |
Diagnosis and treatment | Biopsy, this should be performed by an experienced surgeon. Initial excision and followed by chemo therapy. |
