Rosacea
Question | Answer |

What | Chronic condition associated with erythema flushing and papules and pustules affecting the face. Occurs in 1/20 Americans. Persons of Celtic origins experience a higher incidence. Female to male ratio is 3:1. |
Physical findings | Facial erythema. Papules and pustules. Excessive warmth, redness, and telangiectasia. Comedomes are absent. |
Physical findings | Chins and cheeks for women are most effected and men tend to have symptoms involving the nose. Ocular findings include dryness, irritation, blepharitis, burning and tearing. Phymatosis is the thickening of the skin seen with Rosacea. |
Treatments | Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, sun exposure and generally hot drinks. Metronidazole gel or cream is the most common RX, apply bid. Retin A or micronized Retin A may also be beneficial but is costly. |
Treatments | Systemic antibiotics : Doxycycline 100mg bid for 30 days then wean to daily. Minocycline 50-100mg bid and again wean to daily. Severe cases may respond to genesis laser treatments. |
