Strategies for answering multiple choice questions
Question | Answer |

Don’t keep changing your answer. Usually your first choice is the right one, unless you did not read the question correctly. | Trust your instincts |
Cross out the answers that you know are incorrect. | Process of Elimination |

Go back to the passage to look for the answer. | Look back |
Replace unfamiliar words. | Context clues |
Think of the answer before viewing the choices. Then, look to see if your answer is the same as, or close to, one of the choices. | Guess and check |
Make notes about the main points in the passage. | Summarize |
Make sure you know what the question is asking. | Reread for clarity |
Highlight or underline important parts of the text. | Marking the text |
If you have tried the other strategies and you are still unsure, choose what you think is most likely the answer. | Guess |
Look at the headnotes (at the top of a story) and footnotes (at the bottom). Often times they give you clues to the answer. | Skim and scan |
