What is the mainstay in treatment of Leukemia? Cytotoxic chemotherapy
What is the goal of induction therapy? To bring about or induce a remission
Why do patients become critically ill during induction therapy? Because the bone marrow is severly depressed
What is the nursing focus during inductive therapy? Neutropenia, thrmobocytopenia, anemia, psychosocial support
When is intensification therapy started? After inductive therapy
When does a patient recieve consolidation therapy? After remission is achieved
How often does a patient recieve a treatment during maintenance therapy? every 3 to 4 weeks
What is the goal of hmatopoietic stme cell transplant? To totally leminate leukemic cells formthe body
How is this goal achieved? Chemotherapy, with or without total body irradiation
What are the over goals in planning care for a patient with Leukemia? Patient understanding and cooperation with treatment plan, minimize side effects and complications of disease and treatment, pt will feel hopeful and supported during periods of treatment, relapase and remission
If a patient has no overt disease, a normal bone marrow, and normal peripheral blood evaluation, they are said to be in Complete remission
If a leukemia patient has no symptoms and normal peripheral blood evaluation, but continues to have abnormal bone marrow evaluation, they are said to be in Partial remission
Where do lymphomas originate? in the bone marrow or lymphatic sturctures
If Reed-Sternberg cells are found on a lymph node biopsy, what diagnosis can be made? Hodgkin's Lymphoma
What is the initial development seen in Hodgkin's? enlargement of cervical, axillary, or inguinal lymph nodes
What is the usual prognosis for a patient diagnosed with multiple myeloma? 2 years
What is the key lab finding for diagnosis of multiple myeloma? Bence Jones proteins in the urine
