gangrene | death of tissue caused by infection or lack of blood flow |

melanocyte | cell in the skin that produces and contains the pigment melanin |
necrosis | the death of living cells or tissues caused by lack of nourishment to tissues |
open wound | wound in which the skin's surface in not intact |
pressure points | areas of the body that bear much of its weight |
pressure sore | a serious wound resulting from skin breakdown, also known as decubitus ulcer or bed sore |
psoriasis | a chronic skin condition caused by skin cells growing too quickly resulting in red, white, or silver patches |
ringworm | fungal infection that causes red scaly patches to appear in a ring shape |
scabies | contagious skin infection caused by mites burrowing into the skin |
shearing | rubbing or friction resulting from skin moving one way and the bone underneath remains fixed or moving in the opposite direction |
shingles | a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox |
wart | contagious rough hard bump caused by a virus |
First Degree Burn | Burn with redness in the Epidermis(sunburn) |
Second Degree Burn | Burn with blistering through the Epidermis and Dermis |
Third Degree Burn | Burn with serious damage to Epidermis, Dermis, and underlying tissue affecting muscle and possibly bone |
Stage 1 pressure sore | pressure sore where skin is intact but red |
Stage 2 pressure sore | pressure sore with partial thickness skin loss forming ulcer(blisters)but no necrotic tissue |
Stage 3 pressure sore | pressure sore extending beneath the skin surface to the subcutaneous layer, forming sm crater. There may be no pain. |
Stage 4 pressure sore | pressure sores extending down to the muscles and bones causing extensive damage to deep tissue |
