skin terms

bony prominence areas of the body where the bone lies close to the skin

dermis the inner layer of the two main layers of tissue that make up the skin
eczema a temporary or a chronic skin disorder that results in redness, itching, cracking.(dermatitis)
epidermis the outer layer of the two main layers of tissur that make up the skin
gangrene death of tissue caused by infection or lack of blood flow
integument natural protective covering
lesion an area of abnormal tissue or an injury or wound
melanin the pigment that gives skin its color
melanocyte cell in the skin that produces and contains the pigment melanin
necrosis the death of living cells or tissues caused by lack of nourishment to tissues
open wound wound in which the skin's surface in not intact
pressure points areas of the body that bear much of its weight
pressure sore a serious wound resulting from skin breakdown, also known as decubitus ulcer or bed sore
psoriasis a chronic skin condition caused by skin cells growing too quickly resulting in red, white, or silver patches
ringworm fungal infection that causes red scaly patches to appear in a ring shape
scabies contagious skin infection caused by mites burrowing into the skin
shearing rubbing or friction resulting from skin moving one way and the bone underneath remains fixed or moving in the opposite direction
shingles a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox
wart contagious rough hard bump caused by a virus
First Degree Burn Burn with redness in the Epidermis(sunburn)
Second Degree Burn Burn with blistering through the Epidermis and Dermis
Third Degree Burn Burn with serious damage to Epidermis, Dermis, and underlying tissue affecting muscle and possibly bone
Stage 1 pressure sore pressure sore where skin is intact but red
Stage 2 pressure sore pressure sore with partial thickness skin loss forming ulcer(blisters)but no necrotic tissue
Stage 3 pressure sore pressure sore extending beneath the skin surface to the subcutaneous layer, forming sm crater. There may be no pain.
Stage 4 pressure sore pressure sores extending down to the muscles and bones causing extensive damage to deep tissue
Benefit to applying heat to the body? relieves pain and muscular tension (benefit of what?)
How does moisture affect warm and cold applications? Strengthens the effect of warm and cold applications
How long should warm or cold applications be applied for? 20 minutes is the magic time for what to be applied?
Non-sterile dressings are applied to ? What type of dressing is applied to dry wounds that have less chance of infection?
