1. bible definition | the bible is the inspired word of God; it is a book of religious truth that shows God’s involvement in history |
2. bible | literally means “book” or “books” |
3. concordance | shows you where in the bible you can find a specific word has every major word of a bible translation in it |
4. commentary | explains what a bible passage means |
5. bible dictionary | explains a topic in detail e.g. snow |
6. atlas | has maps/ information about locations related to the bible |
7. salvation history | the story of what God does in human history to save us/ Jesus is our savior |
8. desert experience | refers to a place to face temptation (what keeps you from God), to renew self through prayer, to find God |
9. Christian | follower of Christ |
10. Christians: three main groups | Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant (COP) |
11. Christology from above | study of Christ, emphasizes His divinity |
12. Christology from below | study of Christ, emphasizes His humanity |
13. theological definition of Jesus | Jesus is one divine person, the second person of the Trinity, who has 2 natures: human and divine |
14. Incarnation | God becoming man; the event that sanctified all the physical world, demanding RESPECT for nature and our bodies |
15. three stages of NT development | HOW: historical, oral, written |
16. Historical stage | Jesus’ life 4B.C.(BCE) to 30 AD (CE). |
17. Oral stage | preaching about Jesus 30 AD (CE) to now |
18. Written stage | NT written: 51 to 110? AD (CE) |
19. Parousia | Greek, refers to the second coming of Christ in glory (returning to earth from heaven) |
20. Are there other sources about Jesus? | Yes, people other than the NT writers mention Jesus |
21. Tacitus | a 1st century Roman historian who mentions Jesus |
22. Josephus | a 1st century Jewish historian who mentions Jesus in his history of Palestine |
23. canon | official list of books in the Bible |

25. evangelists | the Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John |
26. Mark’s symbol | lion because that gospel begins with John the Baptist preaching loudly so all could hear, like a lion’s roar |

28. Luke’s symbol | ox because this gospel has infancy stories, and animals were thought to be near at Jesus’ birth |
29. John’s symbol | eagle because an eagle soars in the heavens and John’s gospel emphasizes the divinity of Jesus; the gospel lifts our thoughts to heaven |
30. godspel | Old English word for gospel which means good news |
31. synoptic gospels | gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke which have a similar order of events |
32. Galilee | Jesus spent most of his life in this area |
33. Jerusalem | the Jewish political and spiritual capital; the Temple was there |

42. Sadducees | wealthy leaders who worked in the Temple; felt their power and wealth were threatened by Jesus’s message so had him arrested and tried |
43. Pharisees | believed in life after death and resurrection; studied and taught the law; often questioned Jesus about the law; would not associate with gentiles or sinners because the law forbade it; rabbis (teachers) who taught the law came from this group |
44. Zealots | might carry a concealed weapon to strike out against the Romans |
45. Essenes | lived removed from cities/ lived in the desert; most likely responsible for writing the Dead Scrolls at Qumran in the desert area near the Dead Sea ; John the Baptist came from the desert and may have been from this group |
