Chapter 5

QuestionAnswer
Parliament The part of the British government that makes laws for the British people.
Export A good sent from one country to another, usually to be sold.
import A good brought into one country or place from another, most often to be sold.
representation The act of speaking for someone else.
boycott A refusal to buy goods or services in order to force the seller to change a rule.
Patriot A colonist who was against British rule and who supported independence.
liberty Freedom
repeal To cancel
Loyalist A colonist who remained loyal to the British king and did not support independence.
neutral Not taking a side in a conflict.
independence Freedom of a country to govern itself.
constitution A plan of government.
legislative branch The branch of government that makes laws.
executive branch The branch of the government that makes sure that laws are carried out.
judicial branch The branch of government made up of courts and judges that decides if laws are fair.
commander in chief The hightest leader of an armed force.
milita A volunteer army
turning point An event that causes important changes.
traitor A person who works to harm his or her own country.
treaty An official agreement between groups or countries.
democracy A form of government in which the people rule by making decisions themselves or by electing leaders to make decisions for them.
budget A written plan for spending money.
bill A plan for a new law.
veto To refuse to give permission for a bill to become law.
appeal To ask for another trial.
justice A judge.
