What was the goal of the Dawes Act? To remove the two weaknesses of the Native Americans that the white Americans saw.
What were the two weaknesses of the Native Americans that the white Americans saw? Their nomadic life and identity by groups (tribes).
What were the effects on the buffalo when people started settling in the Great Plains and moving westward? The population of millions of buffalo quickly dwindled down to barely a thousand left.
Why were buffalo hunted? To feed the people working on the railroads, sport, and for their hide.
What was the first major treaty made between the Native Americans and the U.S. government? The Treaty of Fort Laramie
Why was the Treaty of Fort Laramie issued? To avoid disputes over land between the Native Americans and the incoming settlers and miners.
Who won the Battle of the Little Bighorn? The Sioux indians led by Sioux leaders Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. They defeated Colonel George Custer.
Colonel John Chivington led his troops to open fire on a peaceful Cheyenne village along which place? Sand Creek. The Sand Creek Massacre consisted of Chivington's troops killing more than 150 Cheyenne men, women, and children after opening fire on a peaceful Cheyenne village.
Why did the U.S. government issue the reservation policy for Native Americans? They didn't want dispute over land with the miners traveling West for gold and the Native Americans.
In the Second Treaty of Fort Laramie, what did the U.S. government agree to? To close the Bozeman Trail, abandon the forts, and provide reservation lands to the Sioux indians.
What was the Bozeman Trail? The trail many pioneers and miners used to travel across the Great Plains. To protect these travelers, the U.S. government set up forts along the trail.
