Immune System
Immune System | Immune System | Immune System Cells |
---|---|---|
Non-specific (Innate) | type 1 defense mechanism | |
Specific (acquired) | type 2 defense mechanism | |
Antigen | anything that initiates an immune response | |
tolerance | immunological unresponsiveness to self-antigens | |
innate immunity | physical, biochemical, mechanical barriers (ex: inflammatory response) | |
acquired immunity | antibody-mediated or cell-mediated immunity. requires recognition of antigen and activcation of lypmphocytes | |
antibody-mediated immunity | acquired immunity. production and secretion of antibodies from B lymphocytes with help of T lymphocytes. antibodies facilitate opsonization, neutralization, agglutination, other events | |
cell mediated immunity | directed against altered self-cells (virally infected/malignant) by stimulating T cytotoxic cells to release perforin that inserts into target cell and causes demise. T lymphocyte signals required for this process | |
primary response | first response to an antigen, weak | |
secondary response | stronger than primary response, subsequent response to antigen, memory | |
memory | recalling an antigen | |
diversity | recognizing a variety of substances not yet encountered | |
specificity | generate molecules that specifically interact with antigens |
