Drugs used for Anxiety Disorders

Generalized Anxiety disorder excessive and unrealistic worry about two or more life circumstances for 6 months or longer
Panic disorder begins as a series of acute or unprovoked anxiety(panic) attacks involving an intense, terrifying fear. The attacks do not occur on exposure to an anxiety-causing situation as phobias do.
Phobias irrational fear of a specific object, activity or situation.
Social Phobia fear of being humiliated, scrutinized or embarrassed in public
Simple or specific Phobia Simple or specific – fear of a specific object or situation
OCD (obsession) (unwanted thought, idea, image or urge) that a patient recognizes as time-consuming and senseless but that repeatedly intrudes into the consciousness despite attempts to ignore, prevent, or counteract it.
OCD (compulsion) is a repetitive, intentional, purposeful behavior performed to decrease the anxiety associated with an obsession.
Acute Stress Disorder symptoms during or immediately after the distressing event
Post traumatic stress Disorder symptoms that occur 1 month or more after the trauma
Anxiety Medications Known as anxiolytics, tranquilizers & antianxiety
Anxiety Drug Classifications Benzodiazepines Azaspirones SSRI’s – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors Miscellaneous AntiAnxiety Agents
Benzodiazepines Most commonly used because: “Yo Gaba-Gaba” - works on the Gaba -Gaba hits areas of brain that affect anxiety More consistently effective Less likely to interact with other drugs Account for 75% of 100 million annual prescriptions
Common Benzodiazepines Alprazolam (Xanax) Chlordiazepozide (Librium) Clorazepate(Tranzene) Diazepam (Valium) Lorazepam (Ativan) Oxazepam (Serax)
Common Benzodiazepines Lorazepam (ativan) or oxapam (serax)
Those with reduced hepatic functioning or older adults should take Lorazepam (ativan) or oxapam (serax) – more short acting, preferred drugs Orally or IV (Ativan and Valium)
Azaspirones (Buspirone – Buspar) Doesn't have an addictive effect Requires 7-10 days before initial signs of improvement, 3-4 weeks of therapy
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) Fluvoxamine(luvox) – used primarily in obsessive compulsive disorders, by reducing symptoms
Misc. Anti-anxiety Agents (Hydroxyzine (vistaril, atarax) Antihistamine though seen as multipurpose agent due to diverse actions Orally and IV Used as mild tranquilizer and also pre or post- operative sedation to control vomiting, decrease anxiety and reduce amount of narcotics needed, also to relieve itching
Common adverse effects of Hydroxyzine mostly anticholinergic effects, blurred vision, constipation, mucosal dryness
