Question | Answer |
---|---|
Calcium Channel Blockers Prototype | diltiazem (Cardizem) verapamil (Calan) |
Calcium Channel Blockers MOA | Block calcium influx into cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells. Decreases contractility, increases vasodilation (decreasing bp), decreases conduction (decreasing heart rate). |
Calcium Channel Blockers Adverse Effects | Hypotension, palpitations, dizziness, bradycardia, heart failure. Constipation, nausea. |
Calcium Channel Blockers Contraindications/Cautions | Heart failure, Cardiac conduction problems (heart block), Bradycardia, Hypotension. |
Calcium Channel Blockers Interactions | Other antihypertensives, other drugs that lower heart rate. |
Vasodilators Prototype | sodium nitroprusside (Nipride, Nitropress) |
Vasodilators MOA | Directly relax arteriolar smooth muscle. Results in decreased systemic vascular response, decreased afterload and peripheral vasodilation. |
Vasodilators Adverse Effects | Refractory hypotension, rebound tachycardia, dizziness/lightheadedness. Cyanide toxicity with nitroprusside. |
Vasodilators Indications | Severe hypertension (hypertensive emergencies). |
Vasodilators Cautions/Contraindications | Coronary Artery Disease, Heart failure, peripheral vascular disease. |
Vasodilator Interactions | Any other hypertensives. |
