RAPID should eat w/in 5-15min sp inj, also used in insulin pumps
SHORT ACTING (REGULAR) (humalin R, novolin R, Iletin II Regular) o: 30-60min p:2-3hr d:4-6hr
SHORT ACTING time of adverse rxn: mid AM, mid afternoon; weakness & fatigue
SHORT ACTING clear; given 20-30min a meal, can be alone or c other insulins
INTERMEDIATE ACTING isophane (NPH) o: 2-4hr p:6-12hr d:16-20hr
INTERMEDIATE ACTING time of adverse rxn: early evening; weakness and fatigue
INTERMEDIATE ACTING cloudy & white; can be given sp meals
VERY LONG ACTING glargine (Lantus) o: 1hr p: continuous d: 24hr
VERY LONG ACTING maintains levels regardless of meals, CANNOT be mixed c other insulins, given at bedtime
INSULINS rotate sites, only REGULAR insulin can be given IV!, all can be given SQ
herbal interactions incr bl glucose: bee pollen, ginkgo, glucosamine decr bl glucose: basil, bay leaf, chromium, chinacea, garlic, ginseng
