crackles | heard during inspiration or on expiration w/collapsed or blocked airways-more commonly w/inspiration. They imply either accumulation of fluid secretions |
wheezes | classified as either high or low pitched. High pitch wheezes; associated w/dz of the sm airways & low pitch w/dz of lg airways. Wheezes imply dec airway lumen diameter |
stridor | intense continuous wheezes. auscultation with a stethoscope can usually id an area of max intensity associated w/airway obstruction. This is typically either at the larynx or thoracic inlet. Stridor indicates upper airway obstruction. |
rhonchi or rales | Rhonchi are also described as "continuous" sounds. They are lower in pitch than wheezes and have a snoring quality |
