Industrial Revolution | Started in England; more and more factories opened in New England after the War of 1812; hand tools were replaced by factories; the main source of work became the factories instead of farming. |
Lowell Mills | Built in Massachusetts; used child labor and young women; increased production after the invention of Whitney's cotton gin |
Cotton Boom | After Whitney's cotton gin was invented, planters wanted to grow more cotton. This led to the need for more slaves. It also resulted in more Native Americans being forced from their land because plantation owners wanted more land for cotton production |
Slavery Expands | After the invention of the cotton gin, more slaves were needed for the increase in cotton production |
Nat Turner's Rebellion | An armed rebellion by Nat Turner and 70 followers in which 55 white men, women and children were killed. This led legislatures to enact stricter slave laws. |
American System | This system promoted: economic diversification, internal improvements like roads, railraods and canals to tie different parts of the country together, the National Bank to establish a uniform currency, and tariffs on imports to protect U.S. industry |
Erie Canal | a man-made channel built to connect the Great Lakes to the Hudson River. |
Era of Good Feelings | During Monroe's administration after the War of 1812 when the nation experienced a feeling of patriotism & nationalism, and began increasing US industries and transportation |
McCulloch v. Maryland | reaffirmed the government's right to create a national bank and strengthened the federal government |
Gibbons v. Ogden | Reaffirmed the government's right to regulate interstate commerce (trade between states) and strengthened the federal government |
Rush-Bagot Agreement | Agreement between Britian and the U.S. to limit warships on the Great Lakes |
Convention of 1818 | Britain and the U.S. set the northern boundary of the U.S. at the 49th parallel |
Adams Onis Treaty | U.S. acquires Florida from Spain |
Missouri Compromise | This kept the balance of power between the free and slave states. It allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Also said there would be no slavery allowed in states north of 36'30 --the Missouri Compromise line |
Monroe Doctrine | Was about Latin America. Said (1) America would stay out of European Affairs (2) European nations could not colonize any nation in the Western Hemisphere, and (3) any attempt at colonization was a direct attack on U.S. interests |
