Discuss the etiology of bronchietctasis. | congenital or acquired, associated with hereditary immunodeficiency disease that impair movement of cilia, diffuse disease in with cystic fibrosis, asthma, bronchitis; localized with foreign body in airway |
Is bronchiectasis obstructive or restrictive? | obstructive |
Explain how airway obstruction leads to bronchiectasis? | obstructed airway prevents clearance leading to infection in bronchi/bronchioles, changes in normal tissue structure, cililated columnar epithelium replaced with scar tissue, distorted area, impaired clearance, repeated infection, more damage |
What are the signs and symptoms of Bronchiectasis? | cough with copious amounts of purulent sputum, sputum has sweet odor and settles into 3 layers, hemoptysis, malaise, fatigue, exertional dyspnea, may cause corpulmonale, anorexia, weight loss |
What signs are diagnostic for bronchiectasis? | Hx of persistant cough with copious expectoration; moist, coarse crackles over affected area; confirmed by CT scan showing dilated airways |
List some things that can be done to help the patient with bronchietasis. | control infection with antibiotics, remove secretions, avoid irritants, pulmonary toileting, hydration, O2 prn, therapeutic suctioning for to remove thick secretions |
