Pharmacotherapeutics The achievement of the desired therapeutic goal from drug therapy. The terms indications and therapeutics are synonyms
Pharmacokinetics Movement of the drug particles inside the body and the processes that occur during this movement. The effect of the body on the drug. (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism & Excretion)
Absorption Movement of drug from site of administration into the bloodstream
Distribution Movement of the drug through the bloodstream, into the tissues and eventually the cells
Metabolism The conversion of the drug into another substance or substances
Excretion The removal of the drug or what the drug became after metabolism from the body
Steady State Occurs at 4-5 half-lives. When the amount of drug being absorbed equals the amount of drug being excreted
Pharmacodynamics Biological, Cehmical, and Physiologic actions of a particular drug within the body and the study of how those actions occur. Essentially how the drug affects the body
Agonists Promote a function
Antagonists Blockers. Attach to a receptor blocking other molecules and causing an effect.
Anaphylaxis Severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include: acute resp distress, marked hypotension, edema, rash, tachycardia, syanosis and pale, cool skin. Convulsions may occur.
Neurotoxicity: Symptoms drowsiness, auditory and visual disturbances, restlessness, nystagmus (involuntary cyclic movement of the eyeballs) and tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures
Hepatotoxicity: Symptoms Hepatitis, jaundice, elebated liver enzyme levels and fatty infiltrations of the liver
Nephrotoxicity: Symptoms Decreased urinary output, elebated BUN, increased serum creatinine, altered acid-base balance,a nd electrolyte imbalances
Ototoxicity: Symptoms (Damage to the 8th cranial nerve) Tinnitus, sensorineural hearing loss. light-headedness, vertigo, spinning sensation, nausea & vomiting
Cardiotoxicity: Symptoms Irregular rythms and conduction, heart failure and damage to the myocardium
