Native American Vocab

QuestionAnswer
totem pole a tree trunk that is carved with sacred images by Native Americans. Ex: A totem pole should be read from top to bottom.
potlatch a special feast given by Native Americans of the Northwest Coast in which the guests receive gifts Ex: Some Native Americans held a potlatch when they raised a totem pole.
migrate to move from one place to another Ex: Sometimes people migrate to escape the dangers of war.
hogan a Navajo dwelling Ex: The frame of the dome-shaped hogan is covered with mud or sod.
teepee a cone-shaped tent made from animal hides and wooden poles and used by Native Americans of the Plains Ex: Some Native Americans used bison skins to make their teepees.
lodge a type of home made of logs, grasses, sticks and soil, used by Native Americans of the Plains Ex: A fireplace provided heat to the lodges made by the Plains group.
travois a kind of sled that is dragged to move supplies Ex: People of the Plains used a travois to carry meat and skins from a hunting site to camp.
coup stick a weapon used by the Lakota Sioux fighter to show bravery by touching, but not killing, an enemy Ex: The boys of the Plains people showed their courage when they used a coup stick.
slash-and-burn to cut and burn trees to clear land for farming Ex: Slash-and-burn farming was practiced because the forests were so thick.
longhouse a home shared by several related Iroquois families Ex: Holes in the roof of the longhouse let out the smoke from the fireplaces inside.
Creek Confederacy the union formed by several groups of Creek Indians to protect themselves Ex: The towns in the Creek Confederacy were broken into war towns and peace towns.
clan a group of families that share the same ancestor Ex: Each member of a clan is related to one another.
Iroquois Confederacy made up of five major Iroquois peoples beginning about 1570 Ex: Fighting among the Iroquois led to the creation of the Iroquois Confederacy.
Wampum polished beads made from shells strung or woven together and used in gift-giving and trading by Native Americans Ex: Wampum was used in Iroquois ceremonies.
