Enkephalins | Opioids that are widespread throughout the brain and dorsal horn of the spinal cord and are believed to reduce pain sensation by inhibiting the release of substance P. |

Analgesics | Pharmaceutical agent used to relieve pain. The 3 classes are nonopioids, opioids, and adjuvants. |
Ajuvant Analgesics | Enhance the effect of nonopioids, help alleviate other symptoms that aggrevate pain(depression,seizures,inflammation) and are useful for treating neuropathic pain. |
Nonopioids | Acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs), are appropriate for treating mild to moderate pain. |
Dynorphin | The endorphin having the most analgesic effect. |
Nociceptors | Pain receptors |
Gate control theory | Excitatory pain stimuli carried by small diameter nerve fibers can be blocked by inhibiting signals carried by large diameter nerve fibers. |
