Cognitive Therapy: a structured approach which addresses how the client thinks about the world and their place in it.
Mental Illness Mental Illness: clinically significant behavioral syndrome marked by distress, disability, or the risk of suffering disability or loss of freedom
DSM_IV-TR Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders that classifies mental disorders
Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory theory of personality structure, levels of awareness, defense mechanisms, and psychosexual development
Defense Mechanisms: eveloped by the ego to ward of anxiety
Psychotherapy therapy oriented to here and now to assist a client to uncover unconscious issues and improve coping skills
Milieu Therapy: provides a safe structure and emotional climate to facilitate healing
Ethics belief in what is right or wrong
Bioethics: used in ethical dilemmas in health or psychiatric care
Psychiatric Civil Rights: the right to humane care and treatment
Involuntary Admission also known as commitment, made without client’s consent
Tort: a civil wrong against a person where money damages may be collected
Assault: an act where a person is apprehensive of harm to himself
Battery: harmful or offensive touching of a person
Negligence an act of omission what breeches duty of care that injures the client
Standards of Care: professional standards of practice determined by professional associations
Informed Consent clients must be informed of the nature of proposed treatment and the risks associated with them
Right to Privacy: protecting the client’s confidentiality and not releasing personal information without client’s consent
Right to Refuse Treatment: client may refuse treatment or withdraw consent at any time
False Imprisonment: confining a person to a specific area without his consent
