QuestionAnswer
Christopher Columbus Was from Genoa, Italy. He wanted to find a new trade route to Asia. On August 3, 1492 his ships set sail the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. On October 12, 1492 they landed in the Bahamas, he thought he found a route to Asia. He died in 1504.
Ferdinand Magellan Was the first man to circumnavigate the globe, was killed in battle with the Philippines, 1522 his only 18 surviving crew members and 3 of his original 13 ships ended his 40,000 mile journey.
Leif Eriksson In 1000 was sailing back to Norway, his ships got blown off coarse. He was the first European to set foot in North America, settled Vinland which is today Newfoundland, left when Native Americans kept attacking him.
Henry the Navigator In early 1400's built an he observatory and founded a school of navigation, he also helped pay for research by mapmakers and shipbuilders.
Bartolomeu Dias In 1488 he set out on expedition from Portugal down towards the African coast. Then a storm blew his ships around the southern tip of Africa, now called the Cape of Good Hope.
Vasco de Gama King Manuel sent him on expedition around the Cape of Good Hope. He left in July 1497 from Potugal and arrived in India in 1498. Some of the people in India speaked Portuguese. He made two more trips back and even governed a small colony.
Amerigo Vespucci In 1501 he led a Spanish fleet to the coast of todays South America. He knew he wasn't in Asia and thought he had found a "new world." A mapmaker in Germany named this America in honor of Amerigo.
Vasco Nunez Balboa Had a settlement in Panama, he had heard stories from Native Americans about another ocean farther west, and he went to find it. He and his men went through thick jungle and swamps, and in 1513 he reached a mountain in were he could see the Pacific Ocean.
