Chapter 2 Vocab for the Cultural Landscape

QuestionAnswer
Arithmetic Density The total number of people divided by the total land area.
Agricultural Density The ratio of farmers to total amount of land suitable for farming.
Agricultural Revolution The time when humans first domesticated plants and animals and stopped relying on hunting and gathering.
Census A complete count of the population
Crude birth rate The total number of live births in a year for every 1000 people alive in society
Crude death rate The total number of deaths in a year for every 1000 people alive in the society
Demographic Transition The process of change in a society's population from high CBRs and CDRs and low NIR to low CDRs and CBRs and a higher total population
Demography The study of population characteristics
Dependency Ratio The number of people under the age of 15 and over the age of 64 compared to the number of people active in the labor force.
Doubling time The amount of time needed to double a population, assuming there was a constant NIR
Ecumene Places that are habitable, where people have permanently settled
Epidemiology Medical Science concerned with incidence, distribution, and control of diseases that are prevalent among a population at a special time and are produced by some special causes not generally found in the affected locality
Industrial Revolution A series of improvements made in industrial technology
Infant Mortaility Rate (IMR) The total number of deaths per year among babies per 1000 live births
Life expectancy How long a newborn can expect to live from its time of birth
Medical Revolution A series of advances made in the medical field
Natural Increase Rate (NIR) The percentage of growth of a population in a year (CBR - CDR = NIR)
overpopulation When the number of people exceeds the environments capacity
Pandemic A disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects a high percentage of the population
Physiological Density THe number of people per unit of area of arable land suitable for agriculture
Population Pyramid A bar graph representing the distribution of a population by age and gender
Sex ratio `The number of males to number of females in a population
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) The average number of children a woman will have in her child bearing years (15 - 49)
Zero Population growth (ZPG) A decline of TFR to the point where the NIR equals zero
