European Exploration and Settlement

Christopher Columbus A sailor from Italy who explored for Spain. He discovered America in 1492.
Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand King and Queen of Spain who gave money and ships to Columbus to help him explore.
Magellan 1st Spanish captain who tried to sail around the earth.
Conquistadors Spanish explorers and warriors who defeated the Native Americans and took their land.
The Crusades Wars to capture the "Holy Lands" and spread Christianity.
Renaissance Era When people wanted to learn, explore and invent in Europe from 1300's to the 1600's.
Navigator A person who plans the ship's path at sea.
Caravel A ship with both triangle and square sails that helped a ship sail.
Magnetic Compass A tool that tells you what direction you are facing (north, south, east or west.) It helped sailors find their way around the oceans
Astrolabe A tool used by sailors to show what latitude line they were on by measuring the height of the North Star.
Printing Press A machine invented by Johannes Gutenberg that was used to print documents, papers or books.
Circumnavigate To circle around an object (usually the earth).
Colonists A group of people who settle in another land, but are RULED by their HOME government.
Northwest Passage A water route through North America, that didn’t really exist, that Europeans were looking for to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Feudalism When Kings let nobles and serfs use their land in exchange for protection and loyalty.
Manor Serfs (low people) farmed the land for their lords. The lords used their riches to protect the serfs who worked for them.
Columbian Exchange Sending plants, animals, people and diseases back and forth between the Old World (Europe/Africa/Asia) and the New World (Americas)
"New World" North and South America. They were new lands that Europeans had just discovered.
"Old World" Europe, Asia, Africa. They were the old land that Europeans had known about for a long time.
Middle Passage The path taken by ships carrying Africans who were captured and brought to the Americas as slaves.
African Diaspora When Africans were forced from their homes and sold into slavery.
Slave Codes Laws that told people how slaves should live and be treated. Ex. no religion, no education, no marriage, no travel
Slavery Forcing a person to work without paying them.
Racism Thinking that one group is better OR worse based on race (skin color).
Mercantilism Nations get richer by getting gold and silver and trade with other nations.
