JLC Sci Ch13 6th Grade Matter & How It Changes

QuestionAnswer
Physical property A property that involves a substance by itself
Mass The amount of matter something has
Volume The amount of space something takes up
Density Amount of mass something has in relationship to its matter
Formula for Density Density = mass / volume
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that keep their original properties
Physical changes A change that does not alter the properties of a substance
Solution A mixture in which all the substances are evenly distributed
Suspension A uniform mixture that contains particles that can be seen. Particles settle to bottom. Ex: soil in water
Colloid A mixture that contains particles that are too small to see. Particles so small never settle to bottom. Ex milk
Chemical change A change in which one or more new substances are formed.
Chemical property A property that involves the ability of a substance to react with other materials
Reactivity The ability of a substance to go through chemical change.
Stability The ability of a substance to resist going through change.
Acid A substance that turns blue litmus paper red
Base A substance that turns red litmus paper blue
Indicator Indicate whether a substance is acid or base Ex: litmus paper
pH scale The measure of the strength or weakness of acids and bases. 0-14
Neutral Neither acid or base pH=7
Acid pH = 0-7 lower the number the stronger it is
Base pH = 7-14 the higher it is the stronger it is
Synthesis reaction Two or more substances that are put together to form a single substance. Ex: Carbon + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide
Decomposition reaction A single substance breaks up, forming two or more different substances. Ex: electricity through water = hydrogen + oxygen
Single replacement reaction One substance replaces another. Ex: magnesium + lead nitrate = lead + magnesium nitrate
Double replacement reaction Two substances switch places Ex: sodium chloride + silver nitrate = sodium nitrate + silver chloride
