Delegated Powers Powers granted to the federal gov. including coin making, running postal system, regulating trade, providing for nations defense, declaring war,conducting diplomacy.
Elastic clause Allows Congress to stretch it delegated powers to address issues that the nation's founders could not have forseen.
Reserved powers Powers retained by the state governments or by citizens.
Concurrent powers Shared powers by state and federal gov. taxing, borowing money, enforcinglaws, and providing for citizens' welfare.
Representative democracy Government by representatives of the people.
Apportionnment Congress examines change in the population to determine the distribution of representative.
Majority party The politicial party with the most members in each house of Congress.
Minority party The politicial party with the fewer members in each house of Congress.
Speaker of the House The leader of the House of Representatives, who is selected by House members usually from the majority party
Impeach Bring charges against, a president suspected of commiting a crime or of violating the essential presidential duties.
Veto Presidential power to cancel legislation which can be overriden by Congress but it is very difficult because it requires a two-thirds majority vote.
Executive orders To carry out laws that affect administrative matters or executive policy the president sometimes issues executive orders which are nonlegislative directives that have the force of law.
Pardons President has the power to grant pardons, the freedom from punishment, for persons conviced of federal crimes or who are facing criminal charges.
Cabinet Numerous departments carry out most of the work of the excutive branch. Currently there are 14 executive departments. The head of these departments make up the cabinet.
Petition To make a request of the government is another right of the people.
Search Warrant A judges order to authorizes the search because the property in question seems likely to contain evidence relating to a crime.
Due process The fair application of the law.
Indict To formally accuse.
Double Jeopardy To be tried again for the same crime.
Eminent Domain The right to take personal property to further the publics' interest.
Naturalization When a person who was born in a forgein country whose parents are not US citizens under goes a long process in gaining citizenship.
Deport To send back to the country of origin, any immigrant who breaks the law or who is in the country illegally can be deported.
Political action committees (PACs) Organizations that collect money to distribute to candidates who support the same issue as the contributors
