Corynebacterium tiny rods; singles; normal to skin; aerobic; only one species is harmful: C. diphtheriae
Propionibacterium iny rods; singles; normal to skin; anerobic; only one species is harmful: P. aches
Clostridium makes endospores; found in dirt; doubles every 12 min; makes toxins (VF); anaerobic; normal gut flora; metabolizes to make gas
Clostridium botulinum causes: botulism (home canning)
Clostridium tetani causes: tetanus - VF: toxin
Clostridium perfringens causes: gangrene - kills tissue and dying tissue spreads; to heal: scrape wound to rid it of dead tissue
Clostridium difficile normal gut flora; causes - bad diarrhea
Mycobacterium grows slowly = 33 hr. to double; cell wall has waxy coat = nutrients in/out slower; strict aerobe; found in dirt, water, and respiratory tract
Mycobacterium tuberculosis grows best in lungs; test for exposure: PPD (Purified Protein Derivative)
Mycobacterium bovis causes: tuberculosis in cows; BCG = Baccillus of Calmet and Guerin
Mycobacterium avium intracellulare (2 kinds into 1); caused by birds that have tuberculosis; common in AIDS patients
Mycobacterium leprae causes: leprosy; grows very slowly (about 10-20 years; degrades cartilage
