ANTI-INFECTIVES used for tx of infections
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE these lower bp and inc blood flow to the myocardium
ANTIDIARRHEALS decrease gastric motility and reduce water content in the intestinal tract
DIURETICS decrease water and sodium absorption from the Loop of Henle or inhibit antiduretic hormones (potassium-sparing diuretics)
ANTACIDS reduce HCL in stomach. s/e of calcium & aluminum based is constipation. Magnessium based is diarrhea
ANTYPYRETICS reduce fever
ANTIHISTAMINES block release of histamine in allregic reactions. s/e dry mouth, drowsiness, sedation
BRONCHODILATORS dilate large air passages and are commonly prescribed for clients with asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease. s/e is tachycardia
LAXATIVES promote the passage of stool. Types: stool softener, cathartics, fiber, lubricants, stimulants.
ANTICOAGULANTS prevent clot formation by decreasing vit K levels & blocking the clotting chain by preventing platelet aggregation
ANTIANEMICS increase factors necessary for RBC production. Ex: B12, iron & Epogen (erythropoetin)
NARCOTICS/ANALGESICS relieve moderate to severe pain. Includes opiods (morphine & codeine), synthetic opiods (meperidine) & NSAIDS
ANTICONVULSANTS used for mgmt of seizre disorders & tx of bipolar disorder. Includes lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital and phenytoin (Dilantin)
ANTICHOLIGERNICS cause the mucous membranes to become dry; therefore, oral secretions are decreased.
MYDRIATICS dilate the pupils. Used for tx of cataracts
MIOTICS constrict the pupil. Used for tx of glaucoma
