BETA ADRENERGIC BLOCKERS - N/C | monitor client for changes in lab values ( protein, BUN, creatinine) that indicate nephrotic syndrome. Monitor bp, hr & rhythm, signs of edema. Teach the client to rise slowly, report bradycardia, dizziness, confusion, depression or fever. Taper off med. |
BETA ADRENERGIC BLOCKERS - FYI | help lower bp, pulse rate and cardiac output. Also used to treat migraine headaches and other vascular headaches. Act by blocking the sympathetic vasomotor response. |
ANTI INFECTIVES (aminoglycocides) - S/E | ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, seizures, blood dyscrasias, Hypotension, rash |
ANTI INFECTIVES (aminoglycocides) - N/C | obtain history of allergies, monitor I&O, VS during intravenous infusion. Maintain patent IV site. Monitor for therapeutic levels, signs of nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity. Teach pt to report any changes in urinary elimination, monitor peak & trough levels. |
ANTI INFECTIVES (aminoglycocides) - FYI | interferes with the protein synthesis of the bacteria, causing the bacteria to die. |
BENZODIAZEPINES (ANTICONVULSANTS/ANTIANXIETY) - S/E | drowsiness, lethargy, ataxia, depression, restlessness, slurred speech, bradycardia, hypotension, diplopia, nystagamus, nausea/vomiting, constipation, incontinence, urinary retention, respiratory depression, rash, urticaria |
BENZODIAZEPINES (ANTICONVULSANTS/ANTIANXIETY) - N/C | monitory resp, liver function, kidney function, bone marrow function, signs of chem abuse. |
BENZODIAZEPINES (ANTICONVULSANTS/ANTIANXIETY) - FYI | used for their antianxiety or anticonvulsant effects |
PHENOTHIAZINES (ANTIPSYCHOTIC/ANTIEMETIC) - S/E | extraoyramidal effects, drowsiness, sedation, orthostatic hypotension, dry mouth, agranulocytosis, photosensitivity, neuroleptic malignant syndrome |
PHENOTHIAZINES (ANTIPSYCHOTIC/ANTIEMETIC) - N/C | Z track method should be used by IM injection due to tissue irritation. If client is allergic to one, will be allergic to all of them. If client is experiencing s/e, benadryl should be given or cogentin. |
PHENOTHIAZINES (ANTIPSYCHOTIC/ANTIEMETIC) - FYI | used as antiemetics or neuroleptics. Also used to tx psychosis in those clients with schizophrenia |
GLUCOCORTICOIDS - S/E | acne, poor wound healing, ecchymosis, bruising, petechiae, depression, flushing, sweating, mood changes, HTN, osteoperosis, diarrhea, hemorrhage |
GLUCOCORTICOIDS - N/C | monitor glucose level, weigh client daily, monitor bp, signs of infection |
GLUCOCORTICOIDS - FYI | used in tx of conditions requiring suppression of the immune system and in addison's disease. They have anti inflammatory, antiallergenic and antistress effects. Used for replacement therapy for addison's disease. |
GLUCOCORTICOIDS 2 - FYI | As immunosuppressive drugs in post transplant clients and to reduce cerebral edema assoc w head trauma, neurosurgery and brain tumors. |
ANTIVIRALS - S/E | nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, oliguria, proteinuria, vaginitis. Central nervous s/e (less common) tremors, confusion, seizures, severe sudden anemia |
ANTIVIRALS - N/C | report rash (allergic reaction), signs of infection, monitor creatinine level frequently, liver profile, bowel pattern before & during tx |
ANTIVIRALS - FYI | inhibit viral growth by inhibiting an enzyme with the virus. |
CHOLESTEROL -LOWERING AGENTS - S/E | rash, alopecia, dyspepsia, liver dysfunction, muscle weakness (myalgia), headache |
CHOLESTEROL -LOWERING AGENTS - N/C | a diet low in cholesterol & fat, monitor cholesterol level, liver profile, renal function, muscle pain & weakness. Tell client to report visual changes because cataracts can occur. |
CHOLESTEROL -LOWERING AGENTS - FYI | used to lower cholesterol & triglyceride levels and to decrease the potential for cardiovascular disease. SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN W/ GRAPEFRUIT JUICE AND SHOULD BE TAKEN AT NIGHT. |
ANGIOTENSIN RECEPTOR BLOCKERS - S/E | dizziness, insomnia, depression, angina pectoris, second degree AV block, conjunctivitis, diarrhea, nausea/vomitting, impotence, muscle cramps, neutropenia, cough |
ANGIOTENSIN RECEPTOR BLOCKERS - N/C | monitor bp & pulse, BUN, creatinine, electrolytes, hydration status. Tell client to report edema in feet & legs daily |
ANGIOTENSIN RECEPTOR BLOCKERS - FYI | block vascoconstrictor and aldosterone secreting angiotensin II. Used to treat primary and secondary HTN & are an excellent choice for clients who compain of coughing assoc with ACE inhibitors. |
HISTAMINE 2 ANTAGONISTS - S/E | confusion, bradycardia/tachycardia, diarrhea, psychosis, seizures, agranlocytosis, rash, alopecia, gynecomastia, galactorrhea |
HISTAMINE 2 ANTAGONISTS - N/C | monitor BUN, administer med with meals, if taking with antacid, take antacid one hr before or after taking med. Cimetidine may be prescribed in one large dose at bedtime. Sucralfate decreases the effects of histamine 2 receptor blockers |
HISTAMINE 2 ANTAGONISTS - FYI | used in tx of GERD, acid reflux, and gastric ulcers. Inhibits histamine @ release in the gastric parietal cells therefore inhibing gastric acids |
