Discuss the variations in temperature as related to ovulation. A slight drop in temperature occurs 1 day prior to ovulation followed by a rise of .5 to 1 degree at ovulation. Temperature remains elevated for 10 – 12 days
Describe the changes in cervical mucus associated with ovulation. Cervical mucus is abundant, watery, clear, more alkaline, stretchy (spinnbarkeit – like and egg white), and ferning is seen under a microscope.
What changes occur to the cervix at ovulation? the cervical os dilates slightly, softens and rises in the vagina
What four requirements/test results indicate that conditions are favorable for fertilization? postcoital test- live, motile, normal sperm in cervical mucus; fallopian tubes patent; Endometrial biopsy – adequate progesterone and secretory endometrium; 2ml of semen = ¬> 20million sperm/mL, >60% normal, >50% motile
Where does fertilization take place? in the outer third of the fallopian tube (the ampulla)
How long does the fertilized ovum (zygote) take to get to the uterus? 3-4 days
What is nidation? the process of implantation of the zygote into the uterus
How long does nidation take? 7-10 days
How long is a fertilized egg known as a zygote? from 12-14 days after fertilization or from the time of fertilization to implantation in the uterus is achieved
What is the time frame of the Embryo? 3-8 weeks after fertilization
What is a priority risk during the Embryonic stage of development? The embryo is most susceptible to teratogens ( viruses, drugs, radiation, or infections) which can lead to major congenital abnormalities
During what time frame in the unborn child referred to as a fetus? 9 weeks after fertilization to term (38+ weeks)
