aden/o - Combining forms meaning gland.
rhin/o - Combining form meaning nose.
gynec/o Combining forms meaning woman, female.
Anoxia - Absence of oxygen. This term is often used incorrectly to indicate hypoxia.
Hypertrophy - An increase in the size of an organ or structure, or of the body owing to growth rather than tumor formation.
Dermatitis - An inflammatory rash marked by itching and redness.
Nephrorrhea – Disease of the kidney.
Laryngotomy - Incision of the larynx.
Rhinoplasty - Plastic surgery of the nose.
Neuralgia - Pain occurring along the course of a nerve. It may be caused by pressure on nerve trunks, nutritional deficiencies, toxins, or inflammation.
Urologist - A physician who specializes in the practice of urology.
Bradycardia - A slow heartbeat marked by a pulse rate below 60 beats per minute in an adult.
Ophthalmologist - A physician who specializes in the treatment of disorders of the eye.
Hospice An interdisciplinary program of palliative care and supportive services that addresses the physical, spiritual, social, and economic needs of terminally ill patients and their families. This care may be provided in the home or a hospice center.
Informed consent A voluntary agreement made by a well-advised and mentally competent patient to be treated by a health care provider or institution, or randomized into a research study.
Physician's orders –medical record document that contains a complete of care medications, test, and treatments the physician orders for the patient.
Nurse's notes – medical record that records patient’s care throughout the day.
Diagnostic reports – found in a patient’s medical record, it consist of the results of all diagnostic tests performed on the patient, principally from the lab and medical imaging.
Appendix - An appendage, esp. the appendix vermiformis.
Biopsy - A tissue sample removed from the body for microscopic examination, usually to establish a diagnosis.
Superior – upper; 1. Higher than; situated above something else. 2. Better than. 3. One in charge of others.
Intravenous - Within or into a vein.
Acoustic - Pert. to sound or to the sense of hearing.
Cardiac - 1. Pert. to the heart. 2. Pert. to the cardia.
Hysterosalpingectomy - Surgical removal of the uterus and fallopian tubes.
Hydrotherapy - The use of water (in baths, jetted, as a douche, packed as ice, heated, etc.) for irrigation, massage, relaxation, or as an anti-inflammatory.
enter/o - Combining forms meaning intestines.
Antibiotic - 1. Destructive to life. 2. Pert. to antibiosis. 3. A natural or synthetic substance that destroys microorganisms or inhibits their growth. Antibiotics are used extensively to treat infectious diseases in plants, animals, and humans.
Paranasal - Situated near or along the nasal cavities.
Percutaneous - Effected through the skin; describes the application of a medicated ointment by friction, or the removal or injection of a fluid by needle.
Ultrasound - Inaudible sound in the frequency range of approx. 20,000 to 10 billion (109) cycles
Angiostenosis - Narrowing of a vessel, esp. a blood vessel.
Myopathy - Any congenital or acquired muscle disease, marked clinically by focal or diffuse muscular weakness.
Osteogenic - Pert. to osteogenesis.
quad- Medical “shorthand” for quadriceps, quadrilateral, quadrant, quadriplegia.
bi- Prefix meaning two, double, twice.
-algia - Suffixes meaning pain.
Lithiasis - Stone formation.
Cellulitis - A spreading bacterial infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, usually caused by streptococcal or staphylococcal infections in adults.
Chondromalacia - Softening of the articular cartilage, usually involving the patella.
Hemorrhage - The term is usually used to describe episodes of bleeding that last more than a few minutes, compromise organ or tissue perfusion, or threaten life.
Adipose - Fatty; pert. to fat.
Gastric - Pert. to the stomach.
Colostomy - The opening of a portion of the colon through the abdominal wall to its skin surface.
-graph - Combining form used as a suffix meaning an instrument used to make a drawing or written record.
-scopy -Combining form meaning to examine, esp. with a device or tool.
-pexy - A combining form used as a suffix meaning fixation, usually surgical.
