Cleft Lip & Palate

Cleft lip and palate | It is a birth defect of the upper lip and roof of the mouth. It occurs during embryonic development. Primary & secondary palates develope at 6th week and 7th/12th week. May appear separately or together. |
Causes of CL/CP | Multifactorial inheritance, environmental factors & familial, chromosomal syndromes. |
Clinical manifestations | A simple dimple in the border of the lip. Complete separation extending to the floor of the nose. It may be bilateral, occur alone or in combination. Varying degree of nasal deformity. |
Issues | Long term speech therapy problems. Ear problems. Dental problems. Special feeding equipment. Breastfeeding issues. |
Pre and Post op: Lip | Protect the site/airway. Pain management. Antibiotic ointment. Resumption of feeding. |
Pre and Post op: CP | Protect the site/airway. Resume feeding with special equipment. Speech therapy. |
