Hirschsprung Disease

Hirschsprung Disease | Absence of ganglion cells in the colon results in mechanical obstruction of bowels. It is common in males and down syndrome. The first meconium should pass in 24 hours. If not then assess for Hirschsprung disease. |
S & Sx | Accumulation of stool with ab distention. Failure of the internal sphincter to relax. |
S & SX in newborns | Failure to pass meconium, refuse to suck, ab distention, and bile-stained emesis. |
S & SX in older child | Failure to gain weight, delayed growth, constipation with diarrhea and vomiting. |
DX: | Xray; barium enema; anorectal manometric exam; rectal biopsy. |
