Crohn's Disease | Chronic, nonspecific inflammatory bowel disorder that can affect any part of the GI tract from mouth to the anus. It affects the entire full thickness of the GI wall. |
Prevalence | Ages 15-30, both sexes and Jewish ethicity. |
Patho: | Inflammation of the entire layers of the bowel wall and in segments. Most of it occurs in the Ileuim. Ulcers are deep and long inbetween inflammed mucosa. |
Principle symptoms: | Diarrhea (non-bloody), ab pain, weight loss, fatigue and fever. Other: cramping, arthritis and finger clubbing. |
Complications: | Fistulas, strictures, peritonitis, fat/gluten intolerance & liver diseases. |
Diagnostic studies: | Barium studies, ednoscopy with biopsy and lab studies. |
Drug therapy: | Sulifasalazine, corticosteriods & immunosuppressive drugs |
Nutrition therapy: | Diet high in protein and calories. Low residue diet. PTN for severe clients also pre/post op clients. |
Management: | Rest periods, skin and perianal care, monitor side effects, stress reduction activities and when to seek medical help. |
