New England's Economy

What is an industry? All the businesses that make one kind of product or provide one kind of service
What helped the New England Coastal towns prosper? Fishing Industry
Besides hunting and fishing, what mammal was hunted in the waters off the coast of New England? Whales
What is blubber? Fat from whale
What was the blubber used for? They made oil and the oil was used for light in lamps
What happened when the settlers hunted so many whales close to shore? The number of whales decreased.
Because there were fewer whales in number near the coast, what did the settlers do? They built larger ships and traveled farther into the ocean
In addition to fishing and whaling, what industry helped many New Englanders? Trading Industry
What is an export? Goods that are sent out of a country
What do you call goods that come into a country? Imports
What was the triangular trade route? Routes connecting the English colonies in America to England and the west coast of Africa
What was the Middle Passage? The voyage from Africa to America that brought slaves to America.
What were some exports of New England? Furs, lumber, and fish
What imports did the New England Colonies want from England? Manufactured goods
What goods were imported from the West Indies? molasses, coffee, sugar
What industry resulted from the fishing, whaling,and trading industry? Shipbuilding
What are naval stores? Products that were used to build and repair ships
Why was New England a good place for shipbuilding? The forest provided the lumber and they were near the coast to launch the ships
By the later 1700s, 1/3 of all ships sailing under the English flag were built where? New England Colonies
What was one of the largest cities in the North American colonies by 1750? Boston
