ehtnicity bond ppl feel w/ their country of birth or place of ancestral origin
give examples of ethnicity value physical characteristics, give children ethnic names, wear unique clothes, eat native food, appreciated folk music and dance
race biological differences in physical features--skin color, bone structure, eye shape
acculturation adapting to or taking on the behaviors of another group
cultural blindness inability to recognize the values, beliefs, and practices because of strong ethnocentric preferences
cultural imposition inpose ones cultural beliefs, values, and patterns of behavior on persons from different culture
ethnocentrism belief that ones own ethnic heritage is the correct one and superior to others
describe how a persons cultural characteristics influences his actions and behaviors eye contact, space and distance, verbal differences, time , diet, touch
eye contact some cultures believe you should make eye contact and some dont
space and distance some cultures may be threatened by close contact some may not--nurse must explain the need to be closer to pt
verbal differences nurse must carefully observe or tactfully ask questions about communication preferences and tailor the interview accordingly

diet culture indicates the type of food and how frequently aperson eats, type of utensils, and status of a particular person
time two types: 1)clock time--implies the orderly division of time..2) social time--is based more on cultural habits, meals, celebrations, etc
biomedical/scientific perspective cause and effect philosophy of human body functions
naturalistic or holistic perspective natural balance or harmony is essential for health. Hot/cold theory--disease should be treated by addingor subrtracting heat or cold or dryness or moisture to restore balance
